American Government, by Robert A. Heineman, Steven A. Peterson, and Thomas H. Rasmussen

This is a brief text in American government with a difference. Instructors and students alike often find brief texts to be seriously deficient because continuity and focus may be lacking; it is all too obvious that these texts are condensed, severely edited versions of a long text. American Government, on the other hand, doesn?t read that way at all. Instead, it has the signature readability and flow which indicate that it was designed from the start as a brief text. The authors have mastered the art of picking out what is important and saying it clearly, while leaving out the secondary material that a longer text can afford. Theirs is the ideal text for those readers for whom brevity is a factor; it is a text that covers the essentials yet also can serve as an entr?e supplementable by additional readings. This most recent edition, issued in 1995, charts major changes in American politics since the previous edition. Besides adding material on the 1988 and 1992 elections and the Bush (the elder) and Clinton presidencies, the authors review the federal budget process, judicial decisions, foreign policy, and the changing face of Congress.
